Yes, but you are conveniently forgetting the improper extension of scientific patterns into a world-view. A century ago it was Vitalism. Two centuries ago it was the Clockwork Universe. Now it is Evolutionism (among others). (By this I mean the belief that we are strictly meat come from mud, with no God involved.) It is worth considering that this is a faith just as any of the theisms is.

Evolution is a well-established feature of current biology. Natural selection is a cardinal theory used to describe how evolution works. There are other, more speculative theories attached thereto, like the Selfish Gene concept or Punctuated Equilibrium. In a sense ... the cooler the theories get, the more speculative they are. I'd give my neighbor's left nut to know what the philosophical/empirical consensus will be like one, then two centuries from now. (Barring a postnuclear feudal society, lol)
