Edwarda,
Thanks for that comment. It has really been bothering me. I'm sorry for those that were, by such a stroke of fate, tied into this tragic event. It is certainly a reminder that we are really not all created equal. Each one of us has varying degrees of intelligence, compassion, and inner strength - and that's important to remember. A contributing factor to some of the problems we are seeing today may be that there isn't the same circle of support there was when our parents were kids. Families have scattered, and adults find little time to spend with their friends once they have children. Church used to help provide a sense of community, but fewer people seem to go to church these days.
I remember seeing a documentary on the stock market crash in the 20s, and they had actual footage of of people jumping out of windows. While we would all like to think we would get through a crisis with grace and dignity, one never knows. This is not to say that Mark Barton was your average guy, as he obviously was not.
I did not want to stir up any more memories, but did feel that those that displayed compassion and tried to help should be commended. (Yourself included).
Thanks for responding, Jean |
