Dr. Strangelove

Genre: Dark Satire

Protagonist: The President

Antagonist: Dr. Strangelove

Big Struggle: war vs peace, national citizen vs world citizen

Interpersonal Struggle: Russians vs Americans, General vs Ambassador

Internal Struggle: None, everybody is on autopilot.

The Point: The absurdity of nuclear deterrence. Other smaller points are the absurdity of a communist menace/conspiracy, the inhumanity when acceptable causalities are a euphemism for mass murder. Also, the enemy lies within.

Questions and other notes:
President, says, “There shall be no fighting in the War Room!”.

“Peace is our mission” all over the army base as they are firing their weapons.

Ultimately, the technology the general and Dr. Strangelove drool over in their quest for power and ego turns on them and defeats them both due to their delusions of power and glory.

The personal quibbling between the President and Premier as they try to prevent world annihilation.

The Ambassador and his concerns about food in the bunker.

Another film of interest in this genre is Catch-22... any others?

Is this Kubrick's first film?

The film is in Black and White.... no color in 1966?

Who influenced Kubrick's camera work? It is definitely unique... what makes it unique?

Just my opinion.

Jon :)
