If she wants to go to the opera she picked a good one for you to go to as a first opera, very easy to get your hands around.

It is a comic opera, opera buffa. If it is a good production the humour will be very broad with lots of sight gags. It also has some very good music with one of the best, and most popular, arias in the catalog Una Furtiva Lagrima. A real tear jerker. Thats a pun it means A Furtive Tear

L'elisir was the first opera I ever went to and is what got me into opera. What worked for me was to get a good summary of the opera in advance. Read the summary so you know what the story is and the course of action. This way you will be able to follow the story line. The meaning of the actual words is irrelevant. Most Italian speakers can only hear about 40% of the actual words themselves. As long as you have an idea of what the story is you will be fine. The music is light and fun and a good production will be visually entertaining.

Also as someone else said don't let the snobs bother you, be comfortable...or as comfortable as your wife will allow. Real opera fans dress down anyway. I go upwards of twenty times a year and I usually wear jeans and a sweatshirt. I sit in the best seat in the house and get a kick out of the dirty looks. You should have seen the looks I got the time I wore a day-glo pink Hawaiian shirt.

But it will be easy. L'elisir is Donizetti not Wagner. Light, pretty and fun.
