Claiming Power: Consumers vs. Companies

>>The shift in consumer tolerance to these personal information mining endevours by vendors must also occur if revolutionary products like Digital-Me will be able to delivery on your need to personal privacy. Otherwise, you and the Internet community will consider Digital-Me a hinderance to performing e-commerce transaction. WHY? Because in an effort to protect your information - your Digital-Me identity would not allow you to perform transactions with vendors that still demand this information to do business.>>

Toy:

Nice post.

You are right. The first phase will be very generic: single sign-on efficiencies, etc.

But the next phase - where individuals use this technology to form buying networks and communities on their own - could happen very fast.

There are some missing pieces to the technology puzzle which need to be in place for this to happen.

Bottom line, the launch of DigitalMe will be just a foundation starting point. Novell needs to come up with some exciting ideas and focused strategies to get the masses to embrace it. For existing power still rests with companies that are controlling the datastores. And for as long as they can get away with it, they will want to mine us for all the data they can get their hands on.

There is basically a virtual energy & data vacuum out there waiting to be filled. It's up to individuals or companies to fill it.

Companies are viewing this as a potential gold mine. It's the data on individuals - not the "click to buy" effect - that's supporting these Internet valuations.

Amazon.com was just the first of many e-commerce vacuum cleaners sucking in personal data on the buying habits and interests of consumers. With eBay the model exploded even further. eBay's value rests with the data in it's datastore.

I personally think the next wave will be all about unbundling Old Business model datastores, even the datastores behind these e-commerce vacuum cleaners.

Products like DigitalMe and NDS will help us get there. But, again, there are pieces still missing from the puzzle.

It will be very interesting to be an active player in this wave. I certainly plan to be. For it will be less about building companies and more about building networks. These "new networks" will become the new repositories of personal data in a secure, private value-added environment.

Companies will have to shift their focus away from the individual toward these "new networks." For these networks will have a much greater ability to focus, aggregate and consolidate personal information in leveraged ways which add more value to the time we spend in this world.

The transition to this "new space" will be an ongoing evolution, but the energy and value-added created and released will be amazing.

Call it a "war" if you want. I would prefer to call it inevitable. For all power and control WILL shift to the individual. And the individual will decide where he/she wants to invest his/her time and trust. More importantly, it will be a great opportunity for the individuals who actually help transform and speed up the process behind this shift. And this is where "claiming power and control" comes into the picture.

We are seeing the first baby-step examples of this with these virtual buying groups. Very simple and basic, but a first step nonetheless. These models will evolve. I think these buying groups would be a great first step for Novell to focus and cut their teeth on.

Am I making any sense to anyone??

Peace.

GO!!
