I think the problem is not the name itself (American On-Line) - it's really about the brand - AOL did not and could not invest in creating brand overseas because their proprietary closed-platform dial-up service never caught on overseas. Unlike AOL, both MSN and Yahoo embraced the internet through an open-platform system ... MSN already had a tremendous advantage - it was associated with Microsoft, so building the brand overseas was very easy ... and Yahoo because of its simplicity, first mover advantage, and a service which was head-and-shoulders above any of competitors' offerings.

Keep a close eye on AOL's international growth this quarter. Boasting about 3 million overseas customers is nothing to be proud of - especially when the market cap is astronomical $100 billion.
