Chinacat,

While I am very long WIND ... I also am long RSYS and am curious to know what you and others make of this past week's RSYS press releases regarding privately held VenturCom and its apparently WIND-Like relationship to the embedded version of WindowsNT...

From recent RSYS press release
<http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/990914/or_radisys_1.html>

``The imminent market introduction of an embedded version of Windows© NT, will change the entire complexion, delivery and support of the next generation of embedded and real-time products,' stated Michael Dexter-Smith, President and CEO at VenturCom. ``Innovative initiatives, like the one created through this strategic alliance, enable the customer to rapidly deploy, and then maintain and enhance applications on the de facto standard operating system, Windows© NT. It is significant that a major market like gaming should be one of the first to embrace this new approach to building applications. Each party brings its own unique and complementary technology to this powerful alliance.'

Who is VenturCom?

VenturCom Inc. is the leading provider of products and expertise for Windows©-based embedded, real-time and control applications. With distribution channels in more than 30 countries, the company has 400 customers worldwide, plus 35 partners including ATR, CMC, Lucent, Motorola, ObjectAutomation and Komatsu. Additionally, VenturCom has close working relationships with Microsoft and Intel. Microsoft has licensed VenturCom's Component Integrator(TM) for Windows© CE and Windows© NT. Additionally both Microsoft and Intel have invested in the company and in joint development work. Complete corporate and product information is available at VenturCom's Web site: <http://www.vci.com>

From <http://www.vci.com/corporate/profile/corp_profile.html>

VenturCom is the leading provider of products and expertise for Windows-based embedded, real-time and control applications. A provider of complete solutions for embedded and real-time design, VenturCom offers customers the expert guidance and support they need to select the right Windows platform for their project. VenturCom?s products have been licensed for distribution by some of the largest hardware and software companies in the world, including Microsoft and Intel.

Business Outlook
International Data Corporation estimates that revenues for the off-the-shelf operating system portion of the embedded market will reach $500 million by the year 2000 across all vertical areas. It?s not far off to estimate that the market for software that allows developers to build applications on top of these RTOSs would be close in line with that estimate. According to independent sources, VenturCom currently controls nearly 80% of all third-party purchases for embedded real-time extensions for Windows, making VenturCom?s technology the de facto standard. Microsoft has licensed VenturCom's Component Integrator, which it has incorporated into both its Windows NT and Windows CE software development tools.

VenturCom knew from the start that the solutions it built for this highly competitive environment would be licensed or partially replicated by Microsoft. To avoid competing head-to-head, VenturCom has positioned itself to partner with Microsoft by designing cutting edge products that greatly facilitate embedded developers? migration to a Microsoft platform. The company, which has received equity financing from both Intel and Microsoft, continues to develop products that offer added value for embedded real-time and control developers and systems integrators.
Recently, the Gartner Group Report predicted that 15% of embedded systems designs that cost more than $5,000 will include NT Embedded by the end of 2002, and its use will increase to 30% by 2005.ÿ VenturCom foresees this as being the cream of the market that will probably represent a spendÿ of 1/2 billion dollars on tools and runtimes in 2002.

ÿReleased Products

* VenturCom?s RTX is a common real-time development environment for Windows NT and Windows CE applications. RTX also includes a real-time subsystem that delivers hard real-time performance for Windows NT platforms.
* RTX/MP extends the hard real-time functionality of VenturCom?s RTX uniprocessor-based real-time subsystem to multiprocessor systems.
