Clark, the <inbox> retains public posts until they have been read, at which time they are automatically put into the <trash box>. Private messages are retained in the <inbox> until you <remove> them, or respond to them; at that point, they are automatically put into the <trash box>. The <trash box> is organized into private and public posts, and goodly number of recent items are visible.

It's not too dissimilar to Classic SI, except that everything is annoyingly non-intuitive. This is a great example of why the following is one of the basic rules of engineering:

If it ain't busted, don't fix it!
