MSFT has alot more to worry about than AOL...We've seen time after time how MSFT has challenged AOL only to lose...MSN and its 2 million customers pales in comparison with AOL's 18-20 million...Now let's look at the future...once someone has a machine with Windows 98/NT on it, Microsoft's business with that person is essentially over with...Most people will have all they really want from Microsoft...the operating system...However, AOL customers, being so loyal that they continue to stay with AOL, continue paying their $21.95 per month to AOL...Which future looks brighter? You can decide...but maybe this is the reason Gates keeps challenging AOL and the internet...he knows the operating system is a 1 time deal, but ISPs are continual income...Should Gates offer free internet access, he would only be shooting himself, and Microsoft, in the foot....since we already know that AOL customers are loyal, and won't leave AOL for anything short of free broadband....which we know Gates doesn't have, nor would he offer if he did.
