My video card has 8Mb of RAM on board. Should I be upgrading to 16Mb or 32Mb to optimize performance?

It probably would not make a difference in 2d performance. I have a 64MB video card in one of my work machines...I note NO 2D performance increase with the card. Anything over 8MB is most likely assigned to 3D rendering..of no use in 2D.

I once had a card that claimed it was 6MB. In reality it was 2MB 2D and 4MB 3D.

The best way to improve 2D performance is with a fast 2D card. I am also interested in knowing the fastest 2D cards. Speed in a two 2D card is most likely ( I am guessing as usual) related to the speed of the video RAM and the drivers. I have experienced significant 2D performance gains in some applications by just updating drivers.

How much RAM would you suggest for someone who watches fast moving stocks on a realtime ticker? I presently have 128Mb but am thinking of adding another 128Mb.

128MB is a significant amount of RAM. It may not be a bottleneck for you. Give us a few more details about your system. NT or Win95/98? and what processor? and how do you connect to the Internet 56K modem or DSL..cable modem? Hardrive speed and how full?
