allnetdevices.com Companies Unveil Wireless Info Service September 14, 1999 -- SmartServ Online and Data on Air are co-creating a wireless portal and gateway hosting service that they claim will allow wireless carriers and enterprises to easily send Web-based information to wireless devices. Dubbed 4Air.net, the product will enable carriers and enterprises to provide Internet service via GSM, CDMA, TDMA and iDEN devices. The first version will support delivery of short messaging services (SMS) but future versions will support Net devices with Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)-compliant microbrowsers. The service will enable users to select categories of information such as news, weather and sports and set the frequency of alerts they receive. SmartServ Online will optimize the content for wireless devices and Data on Air will host the gateways through which users receive the information. The companies will demonstrate the service this month and carrier trials are expected to begin in October. Prices will depend on the services selected and will be as low as $2 a month.
