Does this mean that the good you do and the evil you avoid, is only in fear of eternal damnation. There is no compassion or even mutual interest that comes from your own heart?

And why is there any knowledge of good and evil to begin with? Why do we differentiate between them? Lions kill competitors and that's survival so it can't come from any evolutionary mechanism. The idea that we should not kill competitors is contrary to nature. But we believe that. So this knowledge came from somewhere else. It is in us all too. The ones it misses are labeled psychopaths. Where did the knowledge of good and evil come from?
