OT, if there is such a thing here.
FT, I have been sending a small sum of money monthly to a man in Lesotho, a writer who has suffered misfortune, for several years, and have just run into a problem. This is his only income, so the problem is important. When I was in Africa, I set up a bank account to which he would be able to deposit American dollar checks. When he moved (was repatriated) to Lesotho, the Lesotho Bank (not a Barclay's, I don't think) at first cashed the checks. Then refused, requiring travelers' checks. Today I got a letter from Jacob saying that they are now refusing American Express Travelers' checks, and will only accept "South African money," as he put it. I assume he means rand. I hope he doesn't mean cash, because even if I can get rand, I won't send cash to Lesotho.
He doesn't live in Maseru, he lives in a very remote area called Qacha's Nek. The branch bank there is probably the size of a two car garage.
He can't do anything complicated or sophisticated. He is physically and mentally ill.
Do you know of a way to buy Travelers' Checks in rand via the internet? Or mail? Using a credit card, maybe?
Does anyone else? |
