Stew,

you will see Gemstar licensed features such as one-touch tune, one-button record and a PIP guide feature that allows the viewer to search and watch TV simultaneously. I refer to this and some other Gemstar IP as enabling but defer to you and the others for its Gorilla Game interpretation.

If I understand those features correctly, you're right that they are enabling software. Any time software "tells" the hardware what to do, it's called system software. All system software is enabling software. (Page 69 of the revised manual, page 63 of the first one.)

The one feature that might not be enabling software is the function that records. Recording functions are prevalent in applications software that record music. My guess is that the recording function we end-users see interacts with system software that makes it possible for audio and video stuff to be recorded. But it's only a guess.
