Actually, I find this an odd argument. It is true that the term, like gentleman, is mildly archaic, but it has not totally slipped out of use, nor is it now used only to refer to grandmas and whores, which was your original assertion. As for the "circles" comment, there is no class implication in the term. One can travel in business circles, academic circles, political circles, etc. All I was doing was conceding that the people you hang out with might use the term in the way that you describe, while denying the sweeping nature of your comment. But mostly, I am bemused. For example, I have seen plenty of restrooms still using such a designation in my neck of the woods. Why would you bother to contradict me? And who much cares? |
