First of all, with its clock for clock architecture lead, especially in floating point, AMD would do just fine with 1/3 cache. But Motorola's copper interconnect technology (that AMD licensed and is using at Dresden) was developed for production and proven on SRAM. They were running 333MHZ a year ago - they are certainly past 400MHZ by now. AMD has that big new copper fab set up with Motorola help and a Motorola technology license, AMD won't have a problem building all the high speed cache it needs.
