My favorite opera is La Boheme. It was one of the first I ever saw as a young teen, but also was the music that reintroduced me to opera. You can't go wrong with Puccini. His music is so melodious, which makes it easier on a novice's ear.

What strikes me whenever I watch opera is how clever the wordplay in the lyrics is. We think of opera as the music, but forget there's a story there, too.

Don't think the audience knows significantly more than you do. They must read the program and the titles, too.

You sound like a very considerate husband. Giving your wife the CD as a gift is a marvelous idea.

Dress up, splurge on a good meal after, and enjoy the show!
