My conservative plays are in my retirement accounts because that's not money I "play" with. And, there's not really any income tax implications that drive my investment choices for these accounts.

I don't think you're "missing anything" as you mentioned in your post.
Perhaps my approach simply gave you a few new ideas that you can pursue and apply with your own portfolio -- in addition to what you're doing right now.

With a conservative account, you're looking for singles and doubles, with an occasional triple or, if lucky, a home run. Lots of runs can be scored with a consistent number of hits.

We can't all hit home runs like Babe Ruth, be we can all avoid striking out as many times as he did.

Keep in mind that when you do write covered calls, only do so on stocks that you would want to own if the covered call writing benefits were absent.
