D.N.--Thanks. Although I've been following DSL for awhile now, I've found that it's quite difficult to find descriptions of what goes on inside the CO. For instance, downstream reference is made to the DSLReports website, which is a good site and does a lot of explaining how DSL works, how the DSL modem and splitter are placed in the home, and a generic view of how the home is connected to the internet. But, they don't go inside the CO.
And, it is clear that a lot is going on within the CO. The explanations tend to assume technical knowledge of where various suppliers' equipment or types of equipment goes. For instance, Redback's equipment (pretty much a single product) is apparently not competitive with Pairgain's, since they're on opposite ends of the CO, if I've got it right. And, it's a moving target! For instance, one incarnation of DSL apparently does without the MDF, somehow ("Huh?" I hear you saying. A lot of discussion of products is ambiguous or just plain wrong, I think).
I'm going to think about this some more, and may come back to you. Thanks again.
