You are correct. Cyrix has a credible competitor. Historically, at
every turn in the PC chip wars, you could get better price/performance
numbers from someone else, whether it was Motorola, TI or whomever.
But somehow the x86 from Intel won. There is a belief in some quarters
that the manufacturing efficiencies that come with first to market and
market dominance smothers all other factors. One thing seems clear.
INTC won't lose their market dominance without a spectacular fight. I do
know that INTC is a superb manufacturer with excellent management. It
will be fun to watch. I still think that they will exceed $5.00 eps
for 96 easily and should see $100 next year. There are never *no*
competitors but 99% of the companies in the US would gladly trade for
the kind of market dominance achieved by INTC.
