What is a Fixed Wireless Network?
The most basic definition of a fixed wireless network, or wireless local loop, is the ability to provide residences and businesses access to public voice and data networks through the use of wireless radio technology instead of traditional copper or fiber wire.
At Lucent Technologies, our fixed wireless network solutions use advanced digital wireless technology to provide voice and data services. Fixed wireless access has several advantages over the traditional wireline service, including lower costs, faster deployment, and the ability to grow a network as market demand increases.
Since the development of the first trans-Atlantic phone call, Lucent Technologies has bridged distances using wireless radio technology when other means were not practical. With our portfolio of wireless local loop solutions, Lucent serves the full range of business objectives being pursued by service providers. These include:
Very high speed microwave connections able to give end customers bandwith-intensive services such as high-speed data and videoconferencing. Mobile networks that do double duty, serving people both at home as well as on the road as they take their phones with them wherever they go. Fixed wireless access for residences and businesses enabling wireline-equivalent services at lower cost and faster deployment.
Lucent's Fixed Wireless Network Solutions offer levels of service from basic voice through high-bandwith data. Our portfolio of products include:

Meeting Broadband Demand
An unprecedented opportunity for service providers, manufacturers and end-users has opened up in the telecommunications industry. Telecommunications reform in the United States, as well as liberalization and privatization internationally, has led to strong end-user demand for high-speed data and voice connectivity. This in turn, has led service providers to try to meet customers' needs with new and innovative approaches.
Breakthroughs in high-speed fixed wireless access technologies, ATM access and software have enabled the emergence of a new form of cost-effective high-speed connection to voice and data networks. This state-of-the-art system is based on a combination of high-frequency, point-to-multipoint radio technology and a dynamic ATM-based bandwidth manager, allowing for services – ranging from voice to high-speed data and video – to be delivered without any physical media (copper, fiber, coax) in the outside plant. The market for this opportunity is here today. Lucent's Wireless Broadband Networks Division intends to take full advantage of it.
