DALLAS (AP) -- Texas Instruments said Monday it will offer software technology that will allow quicker development of products using its digital signal processor chips.

The Dallas-based semiconductor company said the new technology, which it calls eXpressDSP, will make it easier to integrate and reuse blocks of software in different products. Currently, such information often must be rewritten every time it is used in a new product, TI said.

Digital signal processors, or DSPs, drive many communications devices, from cellular phones to high-speed modems for Internet access. Texas Instruments said its new technology could allow developers of products using DSPs to do their work in less than half the current time, allowing new electronics products to come to market more quickly.

The company is betting that many new communications products will create more demand for its DSP chips, TI's main product. The company's chips are programmable, meaning they can be updated as new software becomes available.
