During Linux World Expo last month, Corel previewed its own version of the open-source operating system, adding to the growing list of commercial Linux flavors from vendors such as Caldera Systems Inc., Red Hat Inc., TurboLinux and SuSE.
With a Windows-like interface for nearly half the price, Corel's operating system and suite may offer a serious alternative to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows and Office on the desktop, said industry observers.
Sandra Potter, an analyst at Boston-based Aberdeen Group Inc., said she was impressed with the ease of installation of the Corel Linux distribution.
"It really hides the technicalities of Linux from the average user," she said. "However, everything is still there if someone who is more technical wants to go a different route."
