About the Financial Post
Saturday April 5, 1997 Bre-X haunted by spectre of 'salting'

Rumors swirl around possibility that ore samples from Busang were tampered with and gold was added from another source

By DAVID THOMAS AND PAUL BAGNELL -- The
Financial Post
Mining industry experts are increasingly reaching the conclusion
that rock samples from Bre-X Minerals Ltd.'s Busang gold find in
Indonesia were tampered with.
Several experts interviewed Friday by The Financial Post said it
would have been quite feasible for geologists working at Busang to boost the gold grades in sample material extracted from the
property by adding gold particles from outside properties.
Until now, many mining experts had been baffled by the
complexity of such a potentially massive tampering, or "salting"
job, but the emerging consensus is that it was feasible.
