You have raised some interesting questions, and you certainly know that different people will have different answers to your questions. Well-meaning people differ on many thorny issues, such as capital punishment. The people who favor capital punishment have many different reasons, and so do the people who oppose it.
Similarly, with abortion, there are many different points of view. It is possible, although I doubt it, that some people believe that there is a right to abort a fetus until the minute it is born. I know for a fact that there are many people who believe it is murder to keep a fertilized egg from implanting. And there are many different opinions in between.
I, personally, believe that it IS murder to abort a fetus which is past a certain stage of fetal development, and I would certainly draw the line at 25 weeks gestation. I also believe that it is NOT murder to have an abortion at much earlier stages of fetal development, certainly not before 8 weeks gestation. And the in-between I am not sure about.
Your opinion is probably different.
I don't think I believe life is any less sacred than you do, but your opinion is probably different on that, too.
I take some comfort in the knowledge that my position has been accepted for centuries. Even the Catholic Church was not opposed to abortion before quickening until the 19th century.
On the other hand, slavery has been accepted for centuries, too, and that doesn't make it right. |
