I have a friend who designs ASICs at one of the hard drive companies. He tells me that they're looking at using RDRAM in their hard drives as it combines the streaming performance with the granularity (HDD caches are a little smaller than the memory used in video games, I think). I have no idea if or when it would happen. Also, others can comment on whether or not RDRAM inside the DVR itself would be useful.

<edit: Interestingly, he mentioned the other day that while the engineers think that they should use RDRAM, the procurement people are arguing for DDR because of the cost. From the consulting work I did there (about 3 years) I can say that the engineers always win. <G> There aren't many high-tech companies I've seen where the procurement people get to spec out the products. In fact, there aren't any that I've seen where they do that.>
