I have a friend who designs ASICs at one of the hard drive companies. He tells me that they're looking at using RDRAM in their hard drives as it combines the streaming performance with the granularity (HDD caches are a little smaller than the memory used in video games, I think).

That's odd, the latest controllers use a single SDRAM, which provides adaquate bandwidth.

The problem that hard drive's have is they need less than a single chip's worth of memory, so they will eventually go to embedded memory - not for performance, but as a cost reduction.
