The first quarter is almost history. I note that Value Line is projecting earnings of .29/sh and Zacks (as reported on Yahoo!) is projecting .31/sh. Last quarter Sun did .48, and the first quarter of last year they did .25 (according to those same sources). This is the first quarter they've had the money from the bonds. Other recent events include Forte (not yet closed?) and StarDivision. There have been reports that business is good -- so good that it's reportedly been hard to bring down the backlog, and that they've announced they'll double Starfire production. The recent split announcement exhibits confidence, and I doubt they would have made it if they were about to disappoint. The strong Yen might help earnings repatriation. Any effect of the Taiwan earthquake probably won't be felt until next quarter.

I don't see any significant negatives. Merced and Win2000 are still in the FUD stage, and I think they're rapidly losing the attention of IT managers in favor of the long-awaited thin clients and Internet "appliances." Microsoft's attention is diverted by antitrust concerns, staff changes, the threat from Linux, etc.

I think we could get one heck of an earnings announcement, although Sun could "manage" earnings down by postponing shipments in the last few days of the quarter and by advancing expenditures.

The Network Is The Computer.

But that's JMHO. Do your own research and form your own conclusions.
