The issue is not whether the fertilized egg is a "baby" but if life is to be held as a sacred commodity (and I do think that is a common belief in our society), at what point does terminating the fertilized egg become homicide or tantamount to it. The belief that "life" begins at conception need not derive from religion but could also derive from the inability of our scientific technology to determine with unerring certainty the exact boundaries of such concepts such as what is "life" and what is "death". How do we know for sure when a fertilized egg becomes a "life" and in the absence of knowing for sure how can we not err on the side of caution if we are to properly value human lives? I do not derive such opinions from religion, but from scientific uncertainty. And I'm damn tired of hearing that those who have the opinion that we should err on the side of life on the issue of abortion are all religious zealots and nut cases. To use your phrase, it makes me very cross. JLA
