TSMC Initial Assessment Indicates Minimal Wafer Loss
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 1999--Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE: TSE - news) said at 11:00 a.m. PDT, that a very preliminary analysis following yesterday's earthquake indicates the company may experience a wafer loss for the month on the rough order of about 10 percent. This is not a definitive assessment. Recovery to normal operations will be a gradual process over the next several days. The Hsinchu Industrial Park, where TSMC and several other major foundry companies are located, is still without normal electrical power.
''We will work very hard to give our customers as much information as possible, as frequently as possible,'' said Ron Norris, senior vice president of worldwide marketing and sales for TSMC. ''We are doing everything possible to minimize the impact of this event to our customers.''
TSMC reported earlier that the company's buildings, HVAC systems, water distribution, power distribution, computer and network systems all successfully withstood the effects of the magnitude 7.6 earthquake. All employees are safe and the facilities are operating on stand-by power.
