Buchanans calculation is that he can woo the Reagan Democrats with a message that is socially conservative, but economically "populist". To put it more sharply, he is going after the Wallace vote. Even the speculation that we may have made a mistake in not staying neutral during the Second World War, and should have let Hitler and the Soviets destroy one another, is a Wallace gambit. The problem is that most people, even in the South, now shy away from strident rhetoric, and understand that populist economics is bad for business. He may get the remnants of the Wallace Democrats, but he cannot get the Reagan Democrats. As for the Republicans, if he had much of a following nowadays, he would get better traction and continue to run in the primaries. This is an admission that he is not in the party's mainstream.....
