VoiceStream head Stanton was on CNBC yesterday, said his company was a "consumer-oriented" GSM wireless phone company, as compared with more "business-oriented" operators like Sprint PCS.
(VSTR, voicestream.com)

Another GSM operator, Fido (Canada), also is pitching itself as being more consumer-oriented.

Presumably VoiceStream and Fido believe they can attract consumers to their GSM systems by being equally useful but less expensive to the ordinary person, compared with networks using other protocols.

I'm wondering if GSM handsets and network equipment are currently less expensive than CDMA for these "consumer" wireless networks. Is cost a factor in why VoiceStream selected GSM?

ILG
