My distinction stems from an unwillingness to forgive all sins based on the notion that a person lacks control over him or herself--- that is not always the case. A bad or difficult childhood shouldn't automatically excuse adult wrongdoing. A compulsive gambler who claims to choose to gamble is correct on one level. If he has a problem of control, there are means available to secure help. If he declines help, he chooses the behavior. So, I'm not necessarily willing to attribute a propensity to lie to compulsive, uncontrollable behavior. I still maintain that it is a deliberate choice....
