part of my enjoyment of opera is the bizarre nature of many of the stories and some of the wierd stories behind opera. there is one 19th century French opera where some refugees from opression escape to New Orleans. they are followed there and there is a very moving scene where they are fleeing through the desserts outside of New Orleans...ah but you say there are no desserts outside of New Orleans in fact there are swamps. that is a small and petty detail to place in the way of a good operatic scene :)
