Ladies and Gentlemen:
I'm pleased to report the results of the fifth period of the Loral price prediction pool. Most of you will recall we started this pool in April to commemorate the first anniversary of our April 21, 1998 all time high. 66 entries were submitted predicting the high/low/close for the one year period to end April 21, 2000. Winner will be the entry with the lowest sum of the absolute value of error in each of the h/l/c predicts. As of 9/21, our h/l/c is 22.875/16.125/17.56
Overall, we were down slightly (-4.4%) in the latest month, while staying in a narrow trading range between 19.81 and 17.4, making no new contest high or low, and ending the period (amazingly) exactly where we started the contest (17 5/16). Other than some internal management changes/promotions, there was a marked absence of significant official news from Loral/G* this month. Perhaps the most important events were things that didn't happen or happened to other companies: Hurricane Floyd threatened, but did not destroy Loral-built Echostar V (not to mention four shuttle orbiters); MTSat launch was delayed due to booster problems; LMT got DoJ approval to acquire Comsat without being required to unload it's Loral preferred stock; ICO followed Iridium into Chapter 11; GMH announced layoffs in the face of declining bookings; Bell Atlantic & Vodafone-Airtouch announced their long awaited US JV. Loral hosted an investors' conference that reportedly unveiled G* phones to a select few, but kept the details of the G* rollout plan under tight wraps.
Looking ahead (sorry Jeff!), an aggressive four week launch campaign may start as early as tomorrow with G* and Echostar flights, followed by Telstar 7, Orion 2 and an additional G* launch. In addition, the public unveiling of G* is said to be scheduled for Geneva Telecon in mid-October.
During the last month Loral did better than G*(-10.5%) and matched the DOW (-4.7%) but underperformed peers GMH (+8.4%) and SPOT (+1.7%) as well as the NASDAQ (+6.5%.). Since the contest start, Loral and the DOW are both (oddly enough) unchanged, lagging behind GMH(+6.3%), SPOT (+26.5%), GSTRF (+32.5%) and the NASDAQ (+13.3%). There were no changes in the relative contest standings. Mr. Proofsheet remains in first place and a close of below 17 or above 26 ¾ is required to change that.
