My shot at it ~ agreed, that there is no reason to read "progress" into evolution, as in the illustrated textbook sense that shows a line of marching bipeds, perhaps among them a caricature of a caveman dragging a cavewoman by the hair, the frontmost marcher looking like a European gentleman. Why would you want to?

We know, from the fossil record, that early life on earth was extremely simple, and that over time life on earth became both more complex in structure and more complex in types of species. There is a progression along a continuum. The progression does not appear to go towards simplicity. The complexities of adaption appear to allow more complex life to change so as to exploit different niches, and to respond to changes in niches in order to maintain the ability to exploit them.

It is entirely possible that in the future, more complex life will die out and simpler life dominate once again, due to environmental stresses such as the cooling of the sun.
