You insist on making the unfair distinction between government and the people. Because we live in a democracy, the government is necessarily the embodiement of society's will. If society was really threatened by our strong armed socialist government (as you put it) the government would be changed. That's the way it works. Furthermore, socialism is not working for a government, it is working for the common good. There have been several socialist experiments in the past and all have been rejected, without permanent damage. The Jamestown colony had a communal labor system for a long time before it was rejected in favor of a capitalist system. The same thing happened with the Pilgrims at Plymouth. When a government provides services, it does not necessarily posit a socialist society.
FYI- Slavery is more than 100% taxation. Slavery would be forced labor with NO rights. If you were taxed 100% (which I do not advocate, lest you be confused), you would not be a slave because you can vote to repeal taxes as well as use forums like this to air your views.
