JFieb,

In my opinion, I don't think it is a good idea - unless you know the person at the other end. My approach over the years has been to contact people at the administrative levels, such as those listed on company web sites and have those people put me in touch with engineers or scientists at their discretion. The only exception I have made is with authors of technical articles - many of whom have their e-mail addresses directly listed. This may seem to be a low key approach, but it has been very successful over the years. I like to know ahead of time that the person on the other end is receptive to the call.

I also prefer to send e-mail, because it is a much more efficient mode of communication than a telephone call and I always identify myself as an investor rather than a customer.
