Intel<INTC.O> to offer new "server farms" - FT

LONDON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - U.S. semiconductor maker Intel Corp is to enter the computer services business for the first time and offer customers an electronic commerce hosting service using computer centres built and operated by itself, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

It said the group was expected to announce details of its plan to "rent out" highly reliable, 24 hours a day computer capacity in centrally controlled "server farms" next week.

The service would initially target small and growing companies that did not have the internal resources to operate their own data centres to support growing e-business operations.

Intel Chairman Andy Grove described the new service which would be rolled out initially in the United States and then in Europe as providing computing power "a (computing) bit at a time," the newspaper said.
