Not everyone happy with Corel
Linux programmers don't like conditions attached to test versions of product sent out for review
Bert Hill
The Ottawa Citizen
While stock markets sent Corel Corp. to new heights this week, another influential group was giving the company the raspberry.

They are the programmers that developed the Linux software that is widely seen as a cheaper and better alternative to the Microsoft near-monopoly over computer operating systems.

Many were upset with the conditions that Corel is attaching to test versions of a new Linux operating systems it is sending out for review this week before commercial release in November.

Corel spokeswoman Stefania Allevato said the company will respond to the concerns raised in the debate. "We need to keep a tight rein on during the testing period. But we will publish the code and honour all the open system conditions when the product is released."

Almost 400 submissions were received during the lively debate on the Slashdot.org Web page ("New for Nerds. Stuff that matters.")....

Corel Linux Beta License Violates GPL
John Goerzen writes "Corel today began FAXing out beta test agreements for its Linux distribution. However, these agreements violate GPL in many points by distributing software under terms that the GPL prohibits." Since the distribution is based on Debian, this is justifiably making a lot of folks angry. I've attached the relevant excerpts if you click thru below or else you can view Page One or Page Two of the FAX in GIF format.
