Gateway Plans to Invest $31 Million in Vitech America, WSJ Says

San Diego, Sept. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Gateway Inc. will invest $31 million in cash in Brazilian computer
seller Vitech America Inc. for convertible notes and other options, for a stake in the company of almost
23 percent, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the situation. Gateway will also
acquire the right to buy Miami-based Vitech outright after 2001 based on certain performance criteria.
Gateway and Vitech, which operates from Sao Paulo, Salvador and Ilheus, Brazil, declined to
comment on the announcement, which the unidentified people said could be made as soon as today,
the Journal reported.

Gateway is the No. 2 direct seller of computers behind Dell Computer Corp., and Vitech markets its
products in Brazil under its brand names that include ``Microtec,' ``Quest,' ``Spalla,' ``Vesper' and
``Vision.' (WSJ 9/22 A16 wsj.com)
