JDN:

The main purpose of my post on nicotine gum was to differentiate two completely different markets.

There is a market for nicotine cessation. This is a roughly $500 million market today and is expected to grow to $1.5 billion by 2007 (according to the research report that I provided)

There is a nicotine market that is dominated by cigarettes, and also has cigars and chewing tobacco. The thing that all three of these product lines have in common is tobacco, and tobacco has been found to cause many health problems. According to the research that I found, the tobacco market is worth $46 billion. This dwarfs the nicotine cessation market, and I think it presents a huge opportunity for GumTech and their yet to be released joint venture partner. One can get the "pleasure" of nicotine without the health problems of tobacco and smoke inhalation. Seems like a win-win to me, although I'm not sure how well a product like this would be received by smokers. At a minimum, smokers could use gum in places where smoking is prohibited. They might even like it more than cigarettes for other reasons, and start chewing nicotine gum in lieu of smoking. I'd appreciate any feedback from you or others on this concept.

Thanks,
Dan
