Update for 10:43 a.m. EDT. Soyuz rocket launches with four Globalstar satellites

Wednesday, September 22, 1999

The next four satellites for Globalstar's orbiting constellation are taking their
journey into space today atop a Starsem Soyuz rocket. Liftoff has occurred
on time at 10:33 a.m. EDT (1433 GMT) from Baikonur Cosmodrome,
Kazakstan. Within nine minutes, the rocket's third stage separated from the
Ikar upper stage and attached satellites, Loral officials said. Deployment of
the spacecraft will occur just over 3 1/2 hours after launch. The flight is the
fourth in Globalstar's deployment campaign using a Soyuz/Ikar booster.

The satellites will join 36 others already in space that will ultimately form
Globalstar's network of 48 low-Earth orbiting spacecraft. The system will
provide global telephone and paging services beginning on Oct. 11. Two
further Soyuz launches will place the remaining eight primary Globalstar
satellites into space in October and November.
