Competition encroaching oN LSI, in some markets, LSI encroaching on the competition ..... When the markets get big, that's bound to happen. Very hard to find another Intel.

The biggest thing I got from that article is that it's not easy to do system-on-a-chip. A few painful exmaples are CDMA and NSM/Cyrix.

I find solance in LSI's clear directions/focus and now, the beginning of the successful execution of the strategy. They used the last downturn to position the company/products/manufacturing for the upturn and all that work are about to bear fruit. To me, a lot of these SOC stuff really can't be done until you get to 0.18um. You get a taste at 0.25um, but really needs 0.18um to get real mass market product. Digital cameras, drive-on-a-chip, CDMA etc etc.

Another big plus for LSI is their ability to combine analog and digital. That put a big barrier for new entries. The drive-on-a-chip is just another example of this ability.
