Terayon Selected for Germany`s First Commercial Cable Modem Deployment by PrimaCom; Terayon Deployed as German Broadband Market Opens Up

September 22, 1999

LEIPZIG, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE) via NewsEdge Corporation -- Germany's first commercial cable modem service has been launched by PrimaCom, Germany's third largest independent cable television operator, which is using systems from Terayon Communication Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:TERN) in its Leipzig network.

In addition to Leipzig, PrimaCom operates cable systems in Berlin, Chemnitz, Dresden, Osnabruck and Wiesbaden, passing more than 1.4 million homes and serving more than 880,000 subscribers.

"We chose Terayon because of the proven performance and superior reliability of its systems. Using these systems, we are confident our first commercial cable modem service will be a success," said Andrei Noppe, vice president of technology and network operations for PrimaCom. "We have also realized an important time-to-market advantage with the Terayon system. Its superior performance over a range of plant conditions allows us to minimize network investments."

"Being selected for the first commercial cable modem deployment in Germany is a tremendous vote of confidence in the capabilities of our cable modem system. Germany is a huge emerging market for broadband services that should explode in the next few years," said Zaki Rakib, CEO of Terayon. "As one of its country's leading cable operators, PrimaCom is at the forefront of enabling high-speed data services in Germany with its deployment in Leipzig. "

Deploying Terayon's cable modem systems in Leipzig is PrimaCom's first step in providing residential subscribers and businesses with a variety of broadband services, including telephony, Pay-Per-View (PPV), Video-On-Demand (VOD) and commercial-grade data services. In addition to its Leipzig system, which passes 214,000 homes, PrimaCom plans to offer broadband services over all six of its systems, reaching more than 1.4 million homes.

Germany is the second largest cable television market, after the United States, with more than 25 million homes passed and 17 million subscribers. According to the Strategis Group(a) market research firm, by 2003 Germany will become largest deployer of cable modems in Europe.

PrimaCom's deployment is the latest major European win for Terayon. In March, the company received an order from United Pan-Europe Communications (UPC) for 225,000 cable modems and associated headend equipment. UPC has cable systems in 12 European countries, passing approximately 8.6 million homes. Terayon systems are currently deployed by European cable operators in Belgium, France, Hungary, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland, as well as by major operators in North America, Latin America and Asia.

Terayon's cable modem system, based on S-CDMA (Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) technology, is well suited to the European cable market. The system's high capacity and reliability allows it to support a broad range of residential and commercial data services across cable plants, ranging from all-coaxial systems to hybrid fiber-coax (HFC). Terayon's system incorporates sophisticated Quality of Service (QoS) capability, allowing cable operators to offer tiered services--from residential Internet access to business services for data and telephony. Terayon also offers a CableLabs(R) Certified(TM) DOCSIS 1.0 (Data Over Cable System Interface Specification) cable modem, TeraJet(TM), which is interoperable with other DOCSIS-based products.
