I see you have been sent a url already. That's better than trying to explain it. I will tell you the advantages.

The ball is usually mounted in the middle of the truck bed so the tongue weight is over the rear axle instead of behind it. Think better steering.

The other is in turning radius, especially when backing. With a regular hitch you can go about a 140 degree angle between the towing vehicle and trailer. Some a little more, some a little less. With a goose neck you can go a full 90. Remember a straight line is 180. Ok, for you college educated, a sharper turning radius.
