Chuca - The SF Giants are almost (but not quite) eliminated from the championship of the Western Division of the National League. Their chances are quite slim. Mr. Ball is wrong, of course, to say that they have NO chance. Indeed, they do, albeit very small. I said that Maxam's chances were better than that. They are.

His remarks about the joy felt by the Dodger fans at any hurt put on the Giants are, naturally, a reflection of his culturally impoverished residency. (Although, as the Kingston Trio pointed out some 40+ years ago, LA is a very intellectual city: I know; I met him.) I must say that over the years I have gotten great pleasure from watching the two teams play. Nothing comes close to seeing Marichal vs. Koufax in their primes. Very little in life matches the anticipation of watching McCovey set for a 3 and 1 pitch from Drysdale, then the joy of seeing him hit a home run so hot and low that the second baseman actually jumped for it. AND knowing he'd do the same thing to Drysdaly again and again and again.

Yeah, Maxam is better off than the Giants this year, and WAAAAY better off than the Dodgers. The Peoria Runyons! I expect that it is always darkest just before (1) the dawn or (2) you walk over the edge of a cliff. We'll see...

Best, Ed D.
