Whew...and I thought maybe I was the only one who got that weird depressing feeling... and now I know that there are at least 3 of us in the world.
That strange herd mentality reminds me of a wildlife special on a group of crocodiles that live in a particular area of the Nile. The wildebeests come there to drink for part of the year and the crocs eat them as fast as they can catch them. A big croc will grab the front end of a wildebeest and pull it into the waterhole, and for a few moments, the herd hangs back, but then their thirst drives them back in... grunting some repetitive wildebeest phrase... perhaps, "It won't be me, it won't be me, itwon'tbeme, itwontbeme, itwontbeme, itwontbeme...."
Doesn't seem much different than hordes of humans packed into their choice of tin cans, barreling down a freeway at 70+ m.p.h.... craning their necks to gawk at some collision as they whizzz by, all the while mumbling the protective mantra, "Glad it's not me, glad it's not me, gladitsnotme, gladitsnotme, gladitsnotme...."
Hmmm... I go on a freeway..mmmm..maybe once or twice a year and hate every second of it. Don't go to places where there are mobs, line-ups, or any other place where the mindless herd mentality rules... You're right... it's not a feeling of superiority or thinking you're above it... It's just a case of not wanting to be part of it. True, I may miss out on a lot of good things, but I figure if that's what you have to do to be there... well, it's not worth it... |
