Re: they never apply the same harsh standards of judgement to alternatives...

There is something to what you say, but that is partly in reaction to the cheerleading rambus "stepford wives". It's like talking to a brick wall - and many of them are quite proud of their lack of knowledge and determined to not acquire any. "Intel said to use rambus, therefore it's worth the expense, so that's what I and the rest of the world will certainly do." The fourteenth time that is the response to a carefully reasoned argument, one begins to advocate instead of offering up alternatives.

There is another factor - the alternatives PC133, DDR and VC SDRAM don't increase the cost of the chips, and push back memory sizes by a generation. 128meg Rambus is competing with 256meg PC133, DDR and VC, 256 Rambus will compete with 512 PC166, DDR and VC, etc. at roughly the same price point and availability schedules.

And I've never seen the obvious comparison made - a PC with 128 meg of Rambus and an otherwise Identical one with 256meg of PC133 or DDR or VC.

That's how they will be competing for our desktops - and I don't doubt that doubling the system memory will result in a clear performance increase.

Regards,

Dan
