Very exciting news. AirTouchSatServices has renamed itself GlobalstarUSA and created a corresponding web site:

www.globalstarusa.com

So I did a little "Friendly User Test" of the site and offer these comments. Hope someone at G* USA is reading!

1. Distributors. Of the listed distributors, only GMPCS has G* info. The O'Gara link takes you to a bunch of INMARSAT/Iridium stuff; the Wireless Store and AirStar sites are under construction and the Airtouch Cellular site has nothing concrete about G* service

2. The long-awaited coverage map has several surprises or errors:

Coverage in Peru at service launch but not in Argentina. Partial coverage in Australia at service launch, not nationwide even by y/e 2000. Nationwide coverage also not available by y/e 2000 in Brazil, Russia and China. And no N. Atlantic coverage by y/e 2000. And it's certainly not clear which countries are anticipated to be actually licensed as opposed to happening to be within 1500miles of a GW.

3. Products. There's some info about the QComm fixed and mobile user terminals, but nothing concrete about the "car kit". IMO, few N. American users will buy a mobile handset w/o car kit.

The FAQ provides detailed rollout plan, which is a step forward, but the impatient among us will not be pleased by it:

Globalstar plans a phased rollout to meet customer requirements beginning in late 4Q. (!)

Phase 1 - Friendly user trials; collecting customer feedback on
network performance at no cost to the customer
Phase 2 - Soft Launch; limited commercial launch to key customers
that have requested to be early users of the system
Phase 3 - Commercial Launch; aggressively marketing products to
targeted customer segments

Well, any news is better than no news...
